Somewhere in Texas, Original Oil Painting by Joan Pechanec, 12 x 24 For three winters we have made the long drive from California to Alabama. This painting is from a photo taken from our car on the seemingly endless stretch of Highway 10 through Texas. We passed many isolated small towns with their ubiquitous water towers. I tried to convey the lonely, lost-in-another-time feeling these places evoke. I always wonder what it would be like to live in such a town.

Waterfall, Encaustic by Joan Pechanec, 11 X 14 x 2 1/2”$325 I chose to use encaustic for this semi-abstract image of a waterfall. I love the way the layers of wax create a misty effect on the cool greenish-blue of the water. I added thin rice papers and iridescent lights to create additional texture and surface reflection. I was interested in the way the negative spaces with the smooth sheen of the wax are juxtaposed with the thick textures. And, of course, the encaustic wax layers always create a lovely, mysterious mood.

House on the Bay, Mixed Media by Joan Pechanec, 24 x 36 $550 This large mixed media piece consists of layers of papers, acrylic paints, and oil paints. I wanted to create a semi-abstract effect, emphasizing the varying textures, the warm colors, and the misty light on the water. I was particularly interested in the negative spaces of the land. This painting was inspired by the gorgeous light and the evocative mood of the houses on stilts on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. I fell in love with this area during the 3 winters my husband, Charlie Price, was writer-in-residence in Fairhope, Alabama, a unique old Utopian town in the South.
