Morning in New Orleans, Original Oil Painting by Joan Pechanec, 24 x 24, (1 1/2 gallery wrapped canvas) $400 I saw this scene when I got up early on a visit to New Orleans. The streets were clear, no crowds of tourists or traffic. It had rained the night before and there was still water in the gutters. The beautiful old buildings, rich with their European architecture and embellishments, were stunning in the fresh morning light!

Somewhere in Texas, Original Oil Painting by Joan Pechanec, 12 x 24 For three winters we have made the long drive from California to Alabama. This painting is from a photo taken from our car on the seemingly endless stretch of Highway 10 through Texas. We passed many isolated small towns with their ubiquitous water towers. I tried to convey the lonely, lost-in-another-time feeling these places evoke. I always wonder what it would be like to live in such a town.

Yellow Adobe Original Oil Painting, by Joan Pechanec, 20 x 10 $275 I love the colors of this adobe house outside of Taos, New Mexico: warm buttery yellow with bright turquoise trim. The clear blue of the sky, the sienna of the tree limbs, and the pale lavender blue of the snow all play beautifully with the adobe.

I loved the proportions, the way the vertical cliff dwarfs the small house in the valley, and the sharp value contrast of the morning light. I used a palette knife to paint the rock surfaces so the painting has a dynamic texture.

Canadian Glacier, Original Oil Painting by Joan Pechanec, 24 x 12 (1 1/2 gallery wrapped canvas) $325 This painting was inspired by a trip through the Canadian Ice Fields. The evening light was just reflecting off the tip of the glaciers while the rest of the mountains were enshrouded in mist. At the base, the light reflected on the glacier melt. I wanted the viewer to see the unusual milky green of the water and the feel the atmosphere of the high altitude.

Waterfall, Encaustic by Joan Pechanec, 11 X 14 x 2 1/2”$325 I chose to use encaustic for this semi-abstract image of a waterfall. I love the way the layers of wax create a misty effect on the cool greenish-blue of the water. I added thin rice papers and iridescent lights to create additional texture and surface reflection. I was interested in the way the negative spaces with the smooth sheen of the wax are juxtaposed with the thick textures. And, of course, the encaustic wax layers always create a lovely, mysterious mood.

Salton Sea Desert, Mixed Media by Joan Pechanec 20” x 16” $375 This is a mixed media piece chosen for the juried show “Between the Covers”, art inspired by books, at the Siskiyou Arts Museum in Dunsmuir, California. This is an interpretation of a scene in the thriller “Desert Angel” where a girl is running through the desert to escape her mother’s killer. I painted the landscape in a surrealistic fashion reflecting Angel’s intense and dazed state of mind. Artistically I was interested in the patterns and dimensional texture of the scene. (Charlie Price is an Edgar award-winning novelist and my husband.)

This cluster of old houses in the sand caught my eye. I love the feathery desert trees that survive in this drought-stricken landscape.

Old Mine Building, Original Oil Painting by Joan Pechanec, 16” X 20” unframed 22” x 26” framed $375 I saw this abandoned mine building in the middle of aspen groves in the Canadian Rockies. I was drawn to the weathered blue-grey wood of the old structure tucked in between the intense yellow, red, and orange tones of the trees. It must have once been a thriving operation.

House on the Bay, Mixed Media by Joan Pechanec, 24 x 36 $550 This large mixed media piece consists of layers of papers, acrylic paints, and oil paints. I wanted to create a semi-abstract effect, emphasizing the varying textures, the warm colors, and the misty light on the water. I was particularly interested in the negative spaces of the land. This painting was inspired by the gorgeous light and the evocative mood of the houses on stilts on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. I fell in love with this area during the 3 winters my husband, Charlie Price, was writer-in-residence in Fairhope, Alabama, a unique old Utopian town in the South.

Riverside Trees Mixed Media Collage by Joan Pechanec, 20 x 20, (1 1/2 Gallery Wrapped Canvas) $350 This is a semi-abstract depiction of the moss-covered maple trees on the river bank outside my studio on the Upper Sacramento River. I used a collage paper technique to highlight the deep colors and textures of the trunks. I wanted to emphasize the contrast of the cool blue negative spaces with the thick, rich colors of the foliage. I love these trees which are unique and marvelous every season of the year!
