Joan Pechanec

With my paintings I hope to evoke the elusive space between reality and imagination. I typically use a vibrant colorist palette and emphasize texture and depth in both my representational oil paintings and more abstracted mixed media/collage/ cold wax work.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share through my art the unexpected, powerful, and numinous moments that add beauty and inspiration to my life.

This collection includes both representational oil paintings and mixed media work. For the latter, I have used an even wider variety of materials and techniques, including papers, wax, stamps, moss, mark making tools, iridescent powders and paints, etc.

I am excited to show 2 pieces that also incorporate the Braille Writing of New York poet John Kavanaugh, who is blind . . .  so that he can “see”/feel the paintings.  The Braille is blended into the paintings visually, but the bumps are tactile and brushed with copper highlights. This is an exciting new direction!

Riverside Trees Mixed Media Collage by Joan Pechanec, 20 x 20, (1 1/2 Gallery Wrapped Canvas) $350 This is a semi-abstract depiction of the moss-covered maple trees on the river bank outside my studio on the Upper Sacramento River. I used a collage paper technique to highlight the deep colors and textures of the trunks. I wanted to emphasize the contrast of the cool blue negative spaces with the thick, rich colors of the foliage. I love these trees which are unique and marvelous every season of the year!

Waterfall, Encaustic by Joan Pechanec, 11 X 14 x 2 1/2”$325 I chose to use encaustic for this semi-abstract image of a waterfall. I love the way the layers of wax create a misty effect on the cool greenish-blue of the water. I added thin rice papers and iridescent lights to create additional texture and surface reflection. I was interested in the way the negative spaces with the smooth sheen of the wax are juxtaposed with the thick textures. And, of course, the encaustic wax layers always create a lovely, mysterious mood.
